Version 4.4 crashing on start

Hi Chris,
I just installed 4.4 from the App Store. It crashes instantly when opened. I’ve restarted my laptop but the problem persists.

Oh no! You’ve hit a crash that App Review found with the iOS build—I will try to issue a patch for this ASAP through the public beta channel, and hopefully that’ll correct the problem.

In the meantime, can you do me a favour and try the following for me:

  1. Locate the Capo app in your /Applications folder
  2. Right-click on it, and choose “Show Package Contents”
  3. Find the _MASReceipt folder, and drag/drop that to your Desktop or Downloads folder
  4. Wherever that folder is found, right-click on it and choose “Compress _MASReceipt”
  5. Send that zip file via email to support@supermegaultragroovy.com (don’t share the file here)

Sending that along will help me try to identify the underlying source of the crash, which might be caused by changes to the app store receipt format that my code isn’t handling correctly.

Thanks for your patience and help with this,

Chris

I built and uploaded the app for TestFlight testing. Once it’s reviewed, you should be notified when it’s available.

Unfortunately, I won’t actually know if this fix resolves the crash because TestFlight uses a separate system for generating receipts on the back-end, so it’s going to work for you regardless.

However, once I receive your receipt file and can dig into this a little bit deeper, I’ll (hopefully) get a better sense of whether this is actually going to correct the issue. Fingers crossed!

Hi Chris,
I’ll be testing etc first thing Friday (UK here).

If all goes well, you might not have to wait on the beta build, because I decided to just apply the same patch I have from the iOS release and ship that out directly to the store—I couldn’t keep waiting on them to review the beta build.

I just responded to my first unrelated rejection[1], and hopefully they can shuffle this release out the door sooner rather than later.

  1. Those folks really like to stress me out with these things, and it almost always happens when I’m trying to ship an emergency fix like this! ↩︎

Oh, and I still want you to send that MASReceipt along to me if you can. I gotta figure out what it is about these “magic receipts” that’s causing havoc in this code that’s worked fine for the past 10+ years…

I have the same issue with Capo. I deleted and then reinstalled it. When I open it says it quit unexpectedly. I have a Mac with Sequoia 15.4.1
Thanks,

Is there anything you need me to do to help resolve this issue/

Hey @JOHN_PARKER,

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do unless you are experiencing one of the two “flavours” of crash that are in Capo right now. If you sent me a message in support already with a crash log, and I didn’t reply telling you to run a command at the terminal to delete a preference, then you have the bad crash, which needs a patched build in order to work.

Capo 4.4.1 is sitting “In Review” with Apple as we speak. Sometimes that means it’s just a couple of hours away from getting deployed onto the store, and sometimes the folks at Apple like to torture me and reject my emergency bugfix app submission for silly reasons—they already did this to me once today, asking me to justify my use of a sandbox entitlement that I’ve had for more than 10 years!

Anyway, we’re at the mercy of Apple here. Perhaps you can help me find the underlying cause of this crash by forwarding me a zipped copy of your MASReceipt folder using the instructions I sent to James above.

Thanks!

Good news, everyone!

Capo 4.4.1 was just approved, and is now available on the App Store. Thanks @JOHN_PARKER and @James for submitting your receipt data—I was able to reproduce the crash myself, which allowed me to (a) confirm that my fix worked, and (b) start investigating the underlying problem.

:smiling_face_with_sunglasses: thanks for the update! I’ll check it out tomorrow

Hi Chris, just FYI that it’s no longer crashing :+1:
