Can’t see the full song titles which is really what’s important in the app. This is because the darn file extension takes up a full 12 characters. Can we please get rid of the need to show the suffix? Thanks
Where are you seeing this? I don’t see this issue but maybe we’re looking in different places.
Ah, you’re right. I don’t know if that’s a limitation of iOS. I don’t see those extensions in the same folder on my Mac.
Would like to see a response from the developers to let us know if this can be fixed. It wasn’t always this way.
The developer of Capo is aware of this file extension issue. He has told me that “This is definitely a bug in a system component, and I have someone from the relevant team at Apple looking at this for me.”
@liscio anything to add here?
Appreciate the response but I’ve been told this a few times over the last two years. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed soon? Thanks
I wish I had a better response to this.
Effectively, there is nothing I can do to resolve this issue.[1] It’s a very, very, very stupid bug in iOS that appeared in iOS 13. Apparently nobody wants to fix it for us.
Capo uses a system-level component called UIDocumentBrowserViewController
, which is also used by Pages, Keynote, etc. for iOS. You can configure this component so that it hides the file extensions, and the default setting is to always hide the extension. Despite that, I explicitly tell the system not to show file extensions and they still appear!
Why does this happen?!
Capo uses a bundle document format: each project is a directory full of stuff, and the system makes it appear like a file.[2] If I had to guess, this is likely the cause of our issue. It’s frustrating that I am powerless to do anything about it, and despite my attempts to bring attention to this bug in the past, it still remains unfixed. I even built a sample application for Apple last year to show them just how easily this bug appears, and it’s still not fixed. (In case anyone from Apple’s listening, check out FB9670653.)
Ugh, that’s frustrating for you and us. Thanks for sharing the issue though. Maybe I should email Tim Cook.
If only Apple would let us list file names in a LIST view all over iOS and iPadOS with plenty of width to see full names and headers that would allow us to sort by name alpha and modification date, at the very least.
I often wonder if they ever actually use any of their own software for doing daily things that ordinary folks would do rather than just doing easy “programmer” tests like putting short and simple example file names in icon grid views.
Capo is stuck —along with other apps that need this functionality— if they want to use the tools given by Apple in their programmer’s toolbox. Thank you, liscio, for replying in such good detail.
I’m quite pleased to share this good news: iOS 16.4 finally resolves the issue where project files appear with the unnecessary “.capobundle” suffix in their filename!!
I’ve just confirmed this on my iPhone with the latest iOS release, so go forth and enjoy!
That’s fantastic news. Didn’t even know there was a new iOS update. Downloading it now. Fingers crossed that a future iOS update doesn’t break this again.
