Is there a way to name the markers?
This is not yet possible, but I made space in the code so that markers could—one day—store custom text.
What sort of stuff are you hoping to write for each marker?
For example, do you want to give your markers short names? For example: A, or Start?
Or, would you find it more helpful to be more descriptive and store longer text? For example: This part needs more work, or I need to practice this more, because I can’t seem to make the 4-fret jump fast enough?
Named, overlapping markers would be an extremely welcome addition to Capo. I don’t think the text has to be crazy long, but enough to identify things like: “Verse”, “Chorus”, “Difficult, fast 4-fret jump”, etc. Being able to overlap looped regions is tremendously useful and allows you to practice parts in different contexts. For example, you could practice the entire chorus, or just the first part of it or whatever. Ideally, you’d have an A marker (start) and a B marker (end) to identify the currently looped section, be able to save that section for later recall, or change the A and B points at any time without regard for previously saved regions.
Short names are all I would need, e.g. “chorus”, “verse 2”, “instrumental” etc.
I really enjoy using Capo and this would be a useful addition
Didn’t an earlier version of Capo have different markers, or am I imagining that? IIRC, I’m thinking there was “V” and “C” but there was a gap in my using the app so it’s been a while.
Markers don’t consume any space, so there should be no concern with overlap. Are you confusing markers with (looping) regions, perhaps? (I only ask because those don’t currently allow overlap.)
To me, this sounds a lot like how the looping region feature works today, so I may be misunderstanding what you’re trying to tell me. Could you elaborate?
This is what the section marks in the Structure Song View are intended to be used for.
These are effectively just named markers, however they are only shown in the Structure and Chords song views. I presume you’d like to also see them (in some form) in the Practice song view?
Also, how would you use markers with these names? Purely for navigation (i.e. I want to jump to the start of the verse), or something else as well?
You are correct—Capo used to have a marker mechanism with fixed types for C(horus), V(erse), B(ridge), and also plain M(arker)s. But it also used to only allow a single loop to be saved—it’s come a long way since then!
I’ve been trying[1] to move away from overloading the concept of markers, and setting up distinct features with distinct purposes:
- Markers are intended for placing throwaway marks for fine-grained events in the song—generally, while you’re still trying to identify the notes by ear. For instance, if you’re trying to figure out a solo that has a tricky two-part lick, you might place a marker at the first phrase, and one at the second. That way, you can quickly move the Transcription Cursor to either of the spots you need to suss out. (I cover this in the Breaking Up Solos video.)
- Regions are for defining the areas that you want to loop for practice.[2]
- Sections do what you’d expect: let you mark up the structure of the overall song. You’d set a Verse, Bridge, Chorus, Interlude, A, B, … and assign it one of the pre-defined colors.
Things have evolved, but I’m not quite satisfied with where the current implementation is sitting at the moment. For example, Sections are still sequestered to the two new song views—you can’t access them in the Practice view right now.
Oops! I’m sorry - I clearly confused markers with looped regions. Re: the A and B looped region thing, this was covered in another thread so no need to belabor the point here.
Cool, it’s nice that my memory is correct for once!
I did not know about Sections. I’m going to have to go dig into that.
I didn’t know about song view, but when I tried it I got the message “The song view you selected requires an active subscription”. I have paid for my copy of Capo.
Yeah, the new song views are the first feature I added to Capo that requires past customers to set up a subscription for full access. I wrote something to explain the transition to subscriptions when I made this change. Let me know if you have any lingering questions that aren’t already answered on that page.
In the meantime, you can play around with these new features all you want in trial mode to see if they’re worth the price of admission.
I like this idea. There were times where I’d like to use a text to indicate something like “Solo Start”.
I’d also love to see the ability to name Markers with say vertical text indicating, Solo, Key Change, etc.
